Sure, they might call them chiropterans, but they are vampires nonetheless. Just a little more beastlike than some of the others you might be used to these days. Now on to the actual show. The animation was absolutely amazing. They found the perfect balance between regular animation and CGI animation. Saya looked fairly pretty( unlike in the movie which came before this) and she wasn´t overly sexualized like so many other heroines are these days, which is good since it brought out her strenghts as a character even more. Most other characters were pretty good too, except for Mao which felt a little out of place, and didn´t really contribute with anything more important than comic relief. I also have to say I found Kai very annoying in the beginning, although he matured as the plot moved along. Speaking of the plot I found it moving along at a suprisingly well thought out pace. Not too fast, but not too slow either. And along the way they managed to include both drama, action, humor, horror and romance. They even brought in some political intrigue for those of you who like that(I do, in case you´re wondering). The dialogue was a bit bland and repetitive at times which is why I couldn´t give it the full score. The story in general is not anything revolutionizing but it´s still very entertaining. And I´m a sucker for vampire stories anyhow so I knew I couldn´t keep away from this show :)
