Darker than BLACK is a story set in the future during the modern times in which the world is composed to two things, people and contractors. In this anime, the concept of rationality runs strongly throughout the plot. We can see that through the protagonist Hei, a contractor. though we get the idea that rationality means coldness in character, we see that through Hei's character development, rationality means logic in thinking and action. Eventually we see that it also includes emotion which we surprisingly feel that emotions aren't rational.

The entertainment level is high in this anime for some dramatic action sequences involving Hei and his enemies, the drama between the relationship of contractors and the world, and ultimately Hei's thoughts and feelings which makes him so unique. It may perhaps inspire you to think about your own rationality. I feel that the author's creation of contractors in the story adds a lot color to the plot and some connection to the audience. Is the world filled with contractors a scary thing?

When watching Darker then Black, I suggest watching season one and any OVAs available first because season two poses a lot of questions for the audience and gets confusing at times. Some knowledge of current events and history can also help understand the story better.
