The 1964 Tokyo Olympics represented a new start for Japan — out with the old Meiji-era buildings that reminded citizens of bad times, in with innovation that spoke to the future of a newly peaceful and increasingly prosperous country.
Umi, a shy teenaged girl, manages a boarding house on the Yokohama seaside. Her father was killed in the war and her mother travels constantly, so in addition to attending high school, Umi must also run the family business. Her classmate Shun, an orphan unsure of his lineage, lives with a few other students in the old high-school clubhouse, a French-style, mansion that's set to be demolished as part of the current modernization project. Shun and his schoolmates refuse to let this happen.
As much as they fear losing their shelter, they are also appalled at what they see as the erasure of their history. As the students organize a protest, Shun and Umi grow closer. What begins as a friendship develops into something deeper as these two lonely teenagers find a mutual understanding and trust. Yet when Shun starts to investigate his past, secrets emerge that threaten to tear the two apart. |

From Up on Poppy Hill is a masterpiece in storytelling... no, it isn't childish fantasy nor does it include overt environmental themes like Ghibli is wont to do. Rather it is a light-hearted, historical slice-of-life that will both entertain and charm you. It shys away from heavy dramatic themes like Grave of the Fireflies and focuses on a more tender, romantic storyline.
Utilizing it's now famous art style, Ghibli has managed to create an animated movie that is both classic and yet up-to-date. The feeling of 'natsukashii' I felt as I settled down to watch this was only enhanced by the realization that this is a brand new film yet still maintained that familiarity that all Ghibli productions share.
Almost more impressive than the artwork is its soundtrack! And not just the OP or ED, the music throughout From Up on Poppy Hill is captivating.
As with all Ghibli films, story is king. Yes, the artwork and soundtrack are both amazing, but where From Up on Poppy Hill really shines is that it's just a really, really good piece of storytelling. Even though it's a historical fiction, we aren't bogged down with historical references or hammered with political overtures. And while it briefly touches on some fairly mature themes, it quickly steps back and allows you to just relax and enjoy the tale of two kids in love.
I'll admit when I read the synopsis I was somewhat disappointed and was anticipating far less than what I got. Don't be fooled! From Up on Poppy Hill is everything you've come to expect from Ghibli and perhaps something more...
Highly recommended!
