Summary: |
Two brothers lose their mother to an incurable disease. With the power of "alchemy", they use taboo knowledge to resurrect her. The process fails, and as a toll for using this type of alchemy, the older brother, Edward Elric loses his left leg while the younger brother, Alphonse Elric loses his entire body. To save his brother, Edward sacrifices his right arm and is able to affix his brother's soul to a suit of armor. With the help of a family friend, Edward receives metal limbs - "automail" - to replace his lost ones. With that, Edward vows to search for the Philosopher's Stone to return the brothers to their original bodies, even if it means becoming a "State Alchemist", one who uses his/her alchemy for the military.

When I first got into anime, FMA was the first full length series I ever watched. I loved it. It is a unique story that captivates you and holds your attention to the bitter end. The only drawback I found was it never felt like it was truly resolved - even with the Shambala movie.
Several years on, the series has been re-released to more closely follow the manga, and I for one feel this new series is even better than the original.
In spite of all the numerous awards the original series received, this anime series has more depth, more emotion, and most importantly, RESOLUTION! My wife and I just finished watching this series last night and we were both so engrossed we didn't want it to end.
Some of the things we liked (other than a more complete plot) where that the characters of Hohenheim and Winry were fleshed out and given more time. For example, the relationship between Hohenheim and his sons is much more tangible in this series. You can watch the relationship grow as the series progresses and you're not left feeling that he is a cold, uncaring father as you did in the first series. Also the 'romance' element is stronger in this series - although it still is not a focus. Without mentioning any *spoilers* I will just say that it is happily resolved toward the end of the series.
If you have seen the original FMA but not this series then you're in for a treat. It starts out slowly and quite similar to the original series for the first few episodes but toward the middle and especially the last 10 or so episodes you feel like the series is flying toward some huge climactic ending. Get a firm grip on the couch cos trust me you're in for one heck of a ride!
