Often anything with aliens taking over the world is poorly done, especially in the aftermath. The aliens aren't alien enough, the technology is either far too futuristic for a newly colonised planet or primitive, culture remains the same.
Gintama is a beautiful exception. It's much like what you'd expect would actually happen: people upgrade little bits at a time, the culture becomes bizarre, people accept that the aliens are here to stay fairly quickly. The sci-fi elements are masterfully done. The entire concept is fantastic.
Admitedly, the aliens need work. There are enough to keep the sci-fi thing going, but it feels like there should be more, and not just standard human-looking ones.
Plot is limited, mostly because of the concept of the thing. That is, however, what makes it even more believeable. It's much more of a day to day thing, with very little connection between episodes. It's not excessively drawn out like some of the other stupidly long anime series. It's a fresh idea every episode.
It's also actually FUNNY, unlike some of those others that claim to be. It can be painful at times, or obscure, but it's amusing in its absurdity.
Animation is fine. Gintoki points out in one episode that all the characters are just variations from a simple base, and this becomes apparent quite quickly. Good quality, but monotonous.
Translators could have done a better job making it child-friendly. They might say some of the things they say, but the translators should change some things at their discresion.
All in all, an entertaining show. Worthwhile going through the entire series, even though I haven't yet, and it's stupidly long. I mean, over 200 episodes! Why? Does break the trend for long anime being average at best though.

Also, to the Gruber guy with too many accounts: You are REALLY annoying. can you PLEASE stop writting disgusting stuff on the site? At least make a comment on the anime like the nicer spammers do, rather than ruining people's opinions of anime that they might otherwise watch.
