14 year-old Madoka Kaname has a dream in which a dark haired girl is struggling against an evil force. As Madoka wakes up and goes to school that morning, the very same girl, Homura Akemi, enrolls in her class. Even stranger, Homura seems to know Madoka and later confronts her in the hallway about whether she cares for her friends or not, saying she should stay how she is or else she risks losing everything.
This anime is one of the best series i have watch this year so far! The story is excellent and each episode is full of surprising twist. For those you like to watch magical girls anime series may find this a breath of fresh air or may not like it due to its darker tone. Unlike your typical Magical Girls series which is filled with high-spirited girls joining forces for love, friendship and universal peace using their colorful & flashy attacks this series is a lot more darker, twisted & tragic. The flat-cartoon like animation, the bizarre witches & their weird dimension only add up to the gloomy theme of the series. Instead of concentrating on the main character the series instead focus more on the people surrounding her and each girl has their own unique traits and story. The fights isn't as flashy and colorful compared to other Magical Girl series but is fairly decent and there is still the transformation and magical items that the girls used. The idea to incorporate wishes as a basis for being a magical girl maybe simple and it becomes more complicated as the series progresses. Nothing is what is seems from the witches that the girls fight, to the entity known as Incubator who are responsible for their powers even their existence as Puella Magi. As you watch each episode new things are revealed until the climatic ending and despite their are only 13 eps. the series sums it all up quite nicely and effectively as well.
