Summary: Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs is a 1987 animated space western following a similar theme as Galaxy Rangers and Bravestarr. Originally a 1984 anime series known as Star Musketeer Bismarck (星銃士ビスマルク Seijūshi Bisumaruku) created by Studio Pierrot, it achieved moderate success in Japan. The English language rights to the series was purchased by World Events Productions (WEP) in 1986.[1] WEP reorganized and rewrote the series, incorporating both the original episodes and creating 6 new ones before releasing it under the name Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs.

Having watched this about 20 years ago, I must say that it is one of the cartoon series that set itself apart from others through innovative thinking, a robust storyline and a "moral of the story" conclusion to an episode. Parents did not have to worry about a cartoon series having sexual reference, partial nudity or even cow udders for that matter.

1980 to 1990 was a time where transforming vehicles came into light, and the anime follows along that path with Saber Rider and his star sheriffs manning a huge Ship (plane) called Ramrod. Ramrod is able to transform into a battle-robot in an impressive animation sequence and takes on Renegades (enemy robots).

There are a lot of storylines into the 50 or so episodes but it mainly focuses on the outriders (vapour baddies) hatred towards the humans. As the story progresses there also exists a love rejected human who joins the Outriders and uses his knowledge as a human to assist the outriders.

I was so impressed with the series, that I noob developed a 3D transformation of the robot Ramrod, that can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUmw0xlhKpQ |

The original can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AutolRCZNGg

p.s. Peter Cullen, who does Optimus Prime, is also the voice of Ramrod
