Summary: |
Mugen is a fierce animal-like warrior with a unique Bboying (break-dance) inspired fighting style. Jin has a more traditional style but don’t think of this as a weakness because his skills are amazing. The two contrasting samurai warriors are far from friends, yet their separate paths seem to cross anyways. Mugen is wandering aimlessly through the city when he stumbles upon a teahouse where he meets Jin and Fuu (A ditzy waitress, but don‘t think she doesn‘t have anything hidden up her sleeves). Fuu convinces them both to come with her in search of a mysterious samurai that smells like sunflowers and their journey begins. This modernized hip-hop tale breaks the barriers of the common, historical, samurai anime. |

This IS a wonderful anime, and as said in previous reviews (which is why I watched it), it could be considered a 'Masterpiece', and a 'Must Watch'. Considering this was made in 2004, I am surprised we don't see more anime like this. It feels ground-breaking and perhaps, before it's time.
It is a production unlike anything I have ever seen and definitely in a class of it's own.
From the first episode you will be swept up and pulled along with Characters that defy you to like them.
The 15 year old lead female character, Fuu, who although regularly in trouble, doesn't vapidly accept her fate or wait to be rescued. She is smart and funny, and has just the right mix of strengths and vulnerabilities to keep Jin, and Mugen, a couple of rogue samurai companions, by her side. The two loner Samurai themselves are as different as night and day, yet somehow Fuu manages to balance them out.
Each episode differs from the next, some very funny and others much more dramatic, until near the end when the main story plays out. The blend of modern culture into the Edo period is seamlessly woven in here and there, giving us a uniquely delightful 'affinity' into their world, something I have never experienced before. It left me with the desire to set off on foot for an adventure myself, but the world doesn't work that way anymore, and here in Australia where I am, the distances are just too great! *sigh*
Anyway, you cannot NOT be entertained by this. I cannot recommend it highly enough. And I want a follow up just because it's difficult to part with Fuu, Mugen and Jin.
