This appears to follow one of Wolverine's better arcs from the late 80s or early 90s, which suits an anime as it is set in Japan and involves ninjas (yes, you heard it right, ninjas) and yakuza. As there is only one episode out (for now) it is difficult to judge how well this will succeed, but if you're looking for some fun Logan berserking slashing, this will certainly fit the bill. The action animated really works for the story.
As for the bokken fight, yes, that appeared in the American comicbooks, which was far better explained there. The idea was that Shingen thought of Logan as an animal (and demonstrated in front of Mariko), as was evidenced by his resorting to claws once he lost the "civilized" kendo match. Of course, Shingen was striking to kill during the whole thing, wooden sword or no, which goaded Logan into a frenzy.
