Summary: Kurosaki Ichigo is a 15 year old boy that has an ability to see ghosts/spirits. Because of his ability, he is able to meet a female death god (a.k.a Shinigami) named Kuchiki Rukia. To save his family and friends from unwanted soul-eating spirits (Hollows), Rukia transfers her Shinigami powers to Ichigo. As Rukia takes on a human shell, together they solve mysteries involving spirits and hollows until from the spirit world comes 2 other shinigamis explaining that it is illegal to transfer Shinigami powers to humans and Rukia exceeded the time limit to stay in the human world. After they sentence her death for breaking the laws, Ichigo snaps and swears to everyone he will retrieve Rukia by breaking into the spirit world.

This anime started out kinda like Yu Yu Hakusho. An interesting idea with a lot of potential to make a great anime. The animation is good and the dialogue and characters are, at the beginning, tolerable. Up until the soul society arc the anime is fairly engaging and seems to be setting the stage for a somewhat original action anime. Then it falls out from under itself.

It reverts to an arc based bad guy a la Dragonball Z. New villain shows up, main character fights and loses, gets stronger, fights again and wins. Rinse repeat for next arc. Eventually the Big Bad arc comes up, said Big Bad is on the verge of gaining so much power he cold destroy the universe by sneezing. Main character fights through minions, barely surviving, yet still manages to beat the Big Bad and save the day. Commence happy ending.

This anime is predictable, over the top action with no real ability to set itself apart from the rest of the action anime that have been around for 20-30 years. The potential it had at the beginning fizzled out in place one minute thrills. The characters have no real appeal, you could replace them and nobody would probably care as their personality's never really develop to the point they matter. The dialogue is cheesy and typical, "I must save everyone and never give up" hero speeches.

This is a decent modern starter anime for people who have never really seen much anime except for what is shown on Cartoon Network or Adult Swim but for veterans, watch up to the end of the SS arc and stop, or skip it entirely.
