* Based on a light novel series by Hirasaka Yomi with illustrations by Buriki.
Hasegawa Kodaka, a half-Japanese/half-British boy, has recently transferred to a Catholic High School, St. Chronica's Academy, and as always, finds it impossible to make friends there due to his naturally blond hair, inherited from his dead English mother, which makes him look like a dangerous delinquent to his prejudiced peers. One day after school, he enters the classroom witnessing the equally solitary and very abrasive girl Mikazuki Yozora while she speaks to her Imaginary Friend Tomo. They decide that the best way to improve their social situation is to form a club - the Rinjinbu (Neighbour's Club) - just to make friends and learn social skills.
Five other members soon join, starting with the school's well-connected and arrogant idol Kashiwazaki Sena, who has many male admirers but no female friends due to jealousy. Kusunoki Yukimura, a girl pretending to be a boy, who idealises and follows Kodaka in the hope that it will teach her to become manlier. Kobato, Kodaka's younger sister who is attending St. Chronica's middle school division and has a penchant for darkness, vampires and the macabre ever since she started watching an anime called Full Metal Necromancer. Shiguma Rika, a perverted underclassman and well-known scientific genius, who speaks in the third person and was saved by Kodaka during a failed experiment, thereafter trying to repay him with sex. And finally Takayama Maria, a precocious 10-year-old teacher and nun at the academy, who becomes the club adviser. |

it is indeed enjoyable and entertaining. and for people who don't have friends and stuff joining together, i think they managed to have lots of fun and memories spending time with one another. though one thing i didn't like was yozora teasing sena to such extents... i do understand that that's just how their "relationship/friendship" works, but still, there are times that it seems a little bit too much. other than that, it's all pretty good. the characters are amusing.

"Boku wa tomodachi ga sukunai" sounded like a great anime and I thought it would be one of the best of last season but I must say I'm a bit disappointed by the execution.
This anime's plot should be hilarious: a bunch of weirdos who can't make friends form a club, and the background story of the two main characters is one of its strongest selling points but the plot of each separate episode was often not that interesting. This happens more often in the comedy genre but "tomodachi ga sukunai" had more than one episode in which the characters just ( read more)

This anime's plot should be hilarious: a bunch of weirdos who can't make friends form a club, and the background story of the two main characters is one of its strongest selling points but the plot of each separate episode was often not that interesting. This happens more often in the comedy genre but "tomodachi ga sukunai" had more than one episode in which the characters just played a couple of games and to me, that kind of got a bit repetitive.
There was some good dialogue in this show but when some side characters were involved it got annoying more than once. The characters I'm referring to are the perverted scientist, the cross dressing boy, the annoying little nun and the anime obsessed little sister. The sister is probably the most normal of all these but even she clung to her brother completely naked twice!
These characters lacked any depth or background story and were only there to have a cast of more than three.
The art style and animation were good. The only thing that was a bit distracting a couple of times was the focus on Sena's breasts but I can't really blame them for that.
Contrarily to what I had hoped "Boku wa tomodachi ga sukunai" was only an above average comedy. The concept showed a lot of promise and I enjoyed watching it but personally I liked, for example, "Mayo chiki" better.
What I liked:
- The theme of reuniting old friends
- There was almost as much focus on friendship between two girls as on romance
- The main character's resemblance to a delinquent
What I didn't like:
- Most side characters
- The ending wasn't completely satisfying
- Sena's body could be a bit distracting though some might see this as good. ( show less)

For some reason I started watching Tomodachi and Ore no Imouto simultaneously... I haven't looked it up yet, but the two share a lot of similarities... In fact, Kirino and friends have a cameo appearance in a later episode where the 'Neighbours Club' is at an AniCon...
On to the review... While I enjoyed this series (more so than Imouto) and it certainly had it's share of humorous moments, I felt like it was lacking in a lot of areas. That or it's just not my demographic.
Technically, I enjoyed the animation and the artwork was outstanding. ( read more)

Technically, I enjoyed the animation and the artwork was outstanding. I liked the OP (ahem) music, the ED was so-so and the BGM was good too, nothing too memorable though.
The series however felt rushed and while the characters were for the most part individual and entertaining, their stories didn't progress all that much. One can only hope this is a first season... I will say I enjoyed the final episode the most which is not always the case. It did a good little retrospective flashback that was fun to watch.
Maybe this happens as you progress in age, but I find the whole over-the-top sexuality in what are supposedly young teens a turn off. It's the same in Imouto - sure that stuff happens but I found myself agreeing with the father more in Imouto. But that's for another review...
Although Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai has it's good points, I did not find it to be as 'excellent' as it's rating would lead you to believe. It had some good lessons about friends and friendship but those were mostly lost in the over sexualization of the characters as well as their constant bickering and one-upsmanship. There are definitely much better short series out there... ( show less)

Ugh. "Evil is good" trope making its way into yet another anime. Oh, a nun saying that as long as the demon and the others...
