Ryuugamine Mikado is a boy who longs for the exciting life of the big city. At the invitation of his childhood friend Masaomi, he transfers to a school in Ikebukuro. Masaomi has warned him about people he doesn't want to cross in the city: a champion fighter, an informant, and a mysterious gang called "Darazu." Nervous from Masaomi's stories, Mikado witnesses an urban legend on his first day in the city, the Headless Rider astride a black motorcycle. From then on, the existence of supernatural cases and a gang called the Yellow Turbans will rise to the surface, and Ikebukuro will pushed to the breaking point.
Durarara showed me how myths and legends could still exist in modern cities.
The story's good and mysterious. Many things are only revealed later which makes a seemingly normal schoollife into a modern version of an old tale. This was perfectly summarized by the words of one of the characters near the end of the series:
"There's no such thing as a normal person."
De converstations are pretty deep and sometimes I get the feeling there's even more meaning you can't see the first time you watch. Chatroom sessions can be important to understand the story better. The problem is they're not always voiced and you have to read them real quick.
The animations ordinary. Some things were really well done but not enough to make it stand out.
This anime started quite slow and it kind of changes main characters in the middle which causes it to build up suspense again but especially near the end, I couldn't stop watching.
By the way, the creators of this anime and Baccano really knows how to make intros!
