Gantz tells the story of Kei Kurono and his friend Masaru Kato who die in a train accident and become part of a semi-posthumous "game" in which they and several other recently deceased people are forced to hunt down and kill aliens armed with a handful of futuristic items of equipment and weaponry.
‘Gantz’ is undoubtedly in the top 3 for worst anime I’ve ever seen! I am finding it hard to put into words how awful I found it. Saying this you may wonder how I made it through all 26 episodes, and to be honest I am unsure.
The story is very broken. You aren’t informed throughout the anime about many things such as the alienesque concepts that frequently appear, why certain things happen to the characters, who is the person in power, etcetera, etcetera….
What offended me the most (yes I was nearly yelling at the screen while it was happening) was character behaviour. I don’t want to give anything away if you decide to watch this, however it was abysmal. For example (this does not happen) If a person crawled up to you dying of thirst while you were handing out free water samples, would you then watch them continue to die for 10 minutes and then decide to start tap-dancing? Concepts made no sense, and I found this irritating! Humans did not behave like humans. If you don’t understand what I am saying after watching the scene involving a subway you may actually enjoy Gantz.
On a positive note, something about Gantz captivated me until the final episode. It wasn’t the heavy sexual overtones I assure you, and it most certainly wasn’t the plot. I guess I found the technology interesting, and the fact I had nothing else to watch may have helped.
