Definitely this is the weirdest anime I've ever seen. Some parts are really slow, but then the story builds-up and takes your breathe away. Somehow, the main plot in SEL reminds me of a Kill Switch episode from a very popular TV Show"The X Files". Story is thought-provoking, a little confusing, I might need a second watch. Some anime fans compred this show with Texhnolyze, but Serial Experiment Lain is a unique anime creation that nobody could repeat. I also liked twisted music themes and creepy animation that created weird atmosphere. I would love to see more of this. (show less)

Serial Experiments Lain is an excellent example of a great science fiction anime. I am a person not overly interested in science fiction, but as for this anime, I really enjoyed it. The story and plot are immensely thrilling; once you are done with one episode you are just yearning to go on to the next. The story is quite sad; the humor is quite minimal, if any. The animation and artwork is another quality of this anime which is just amazing. The color schemes used for the background and sometimes the characters are just astounding and reflect the mood of the anime in a spectacular way. The only bad part I find with Serial Experiments Lain is that the story can be very confusing at times. Otherwise, it is simply amazing.

Do not expect a lot of action in this anime, as it mainly focuses on psychological aspects, so if you are only into action/fighting based anime, this is probably not for you. If you do love science fiction anime and/or a great psychological thriller, though, I would definitely recommend this to you. (show less)

The 1st ep start with something like "???"..yea ????... make you curious about what'll happen next..

well, as you reach the half ep..they'll be some explaination as well more "??"...

a simple minded person would think " arghh..wtf is this?!.."

If u are a person who dislike doing something half done then surely you'll watch till the climax.. Plus, how can you leave something with many ??? unclear...

Well, here you go..you reach the ending... yes!! the explaination is here.. but, as you reach the end of the ending ep.. will you clear all the "???" did you understand the whole story??? ahahaha..if not, then make your own ending...

Overall, its a nice anime with a weird (??) storyline. Even with so many "??"..im still giving it 10/10..Try watching it..you'll love it..

I watched this series a while ago and it is one of my favorites. It really isn't fluffy or lighthearted in any way shape or form. It is a very deep and psychological series that will really make you think. I think if I had to relate this series to one other anime it would be Evangelion. While there is no mecha action scenes or anything like that in this show, it is similar to Evangelion in the philosophical sense and in the messages and symbolism it is trying to get across. This anime will make you think, and might even confuse you. It is one of those ones you might have to watch over a few times to really understand, but that's what I love about it. If you are looking for something fluffy and funny or action packed this is not the show for you but if you are looking for something that really makes you think about the world around you and will expand your thoughts about religion, you will love this.
