As usual, there are lots of rave reviews for this anime, but most of them barely cover a few sentences. Seeing as it was so popular, I decided to watch it for myself and write a real review, but was sorely disapointed.
My first impression of the anime was that the animation quality and soundtrack were incredible! There isn't a bit of music in the entirity of what I've watched that I haven't enjoyed. Hats off to the composer! Animation quality was also significantly higher than average. I'm usually fairly blase about animation quality, but (

This of course was just my first impression. Things went quickly downhill from there.
It quickly emerged that people weren't going to be talking TO each other in the anime, they were going to be talking AT each other. Or rather, yelling, for the most part. It was almost like watching an epsiode long argument where none of the characters were willing to back down from their own point of view. They were more like monologues intertwined with each other. Absolutely attrocious.
I admit that I only watched 6 episodes, but perhaps because of the lack of reasonable dialogue, it felt like there wasn't much happening. Big monsters coming and eatting humans, humans fighting back in almost futile effort. Practically the same thing for 6 episodes. Not much in the way of character development beyond what you see in the first few minutes. It almost completely failed to capture my interest at all. The only reason I kept watching as far as 6 episodes were the cliff hangers at the end of some of the episodes. They were, in some cases, the only thing that happened at all in the whole thing.
The entire thing almost seemed to be military propoganda; glorifying murder and unnecessary cruelty. Attempting to spread the myth that soldiers are necessary and save lives. While that may be true in the context of man-eating monsters, the rest of the time it doesn't, and it was dispicable seeing soldiers being glorified while terrorising innocents. The anger management problems of a lot of the protagonists also damped any enjoyment of the anime I might have had. All up, only the animation and music provided any entertainment at all.
In conclusion, it's worth watching brief scenes for the amazing soundtrack and visuals, but you'd get better stories and conversation from a three year old. With autism. I would be inclinded to say that this is probably one of the worst anime I've seen. (
